Another Way to Demonstrate Musical Growth

Music examinations can give students worthwhile goals, encourage focused preparation, and provide meaningful opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned. They can be an important part of a student’s musical education.

The Dennis Frayne Ascent offers another way to recognize and celebrate musical growth. Rather than focusing on a single examination, the Ascent uses a broad range of Demonstrations of Learning through which students can show what they know, understand, and can do as musicians. These demonstrations may include performing, reading, listening, creating, understanding music, developing technique, and applying musical skills in authentic situations.

The Ascent is designed to complement examinations, recitals, competitions, and other musical achievements while giving students a continuing framework for comprehensive musicianship, individual progress, and meaningful recognition.
